A Push To Foster Rescue Animals

Image
While adoption is a commonly known practice for welcoming a pet into the home, the act of ‘fostering’ an animal is also requested of the region’s residents. In the process of delivering pets to a good home, Central West Animal Rescue is appealing to Mudgee, Dubbo and surrounding towns to foster to help save animals. Fostering is considered a smaller commitment, where you give the animal a place to stay part time until a forever home is found for them. Vice President of the Central West Animal Rescue, Kim says while “there are a few registered foster carers in Mudgee and Kandos currently”, are looking to “further extend our foster base by getting more fosters throughout the Mid-Western region.” She also says while the main rescues are dogs and cats, the practice has also taken in birds and other animals, including some from Mudgee pound in the past. The animal rescue says fostering is another care option that’s also free.   Image sourced:centralwestanimalrescue.com.au

Mice Infestation Possible Threat To Crops

Image
While the oversaturated use of the term 'plague' is utilised to describe our current mice infestation; the rodents are not only effecting homes and businesses, but now talk is spreading over the pest possibly having an effect over NSW Winter crops. Public representative body, NSW Farmers Association , is calling on the State Government to take urgent action in helping farmers protect their harvests. Fears continue to rise over the infestation, as the farmers’ association note possibilities of “decimating crops, destroying stored hay and invading silos, sheds and homes.” The NSW Department of Primary Industries (DPI), has commented it is not an uncommon development of this type of infestation following long periods of drought followed by favourable weather conditions. However, there may be a reprieve soon, as the DPI says “Approaching cooler weather in Autumn and Winter is likely to see a reduction in the current numbers being experienced” The formal suggestion for the most eff

Regional Paramedics In The Spotlight

Image
New Data released by the NSW Government has revealed that those that call an Ambulance in the Mudgee region are only seeing Paramedics arrive within the benchmark 15 minute around half of the time. Dave Trusscott from The Australian Paramedics Association, says that statistics like this are risking patients’ lives. “People who are calling an ambulance for a 'priority 1' job, that is the emergency response of ‘lights and sirens’. There only getting there about 40-50% of the time”. He says “If you needed an ambulance quickly, it would only arrive on time about half the time, but minutes and seconds definitely do count”. Mr Truscott also notes that while taking Industrial Action has not been ruled out, they usually keep that as a last resort. The Association is asking the State Government for more staff to help bring those wait times down. “The APA are generally asking for more paramedics. It’s plain and simple, we need more on-road staff, assistance medics, as well as e

Concern over supermarket renovations

Image
A Local resident has expressed concern in relation to changes at Mudgee’s Woolworths supermarket, which he says makes ordinarily difficult activities even harder for those with a physical disability. In an email sent to 2MG, the customer says that he understand works have done away with the customer entrance closest to Byron Place, giving shoppers just one place to enter across from BWS liquor on the Mortimer Street side of the store. The man claims that without major changes this is both inconvenient and appears to be potentially dangerous. He says that he believes that most Woolworths shoppers are likely to park in Byron Place, where over a number of years Council has invested large amounts of money and effort to create a primary parking area for the Mudgee CBD, and now those parking in Byron Place we must make their way diagonally across much of the width of the store and down the sloping floor that runs in front of the Woolworths checkout section. He goes on to say that while sti

St Matthew's Secondary Campus Construction Begins

Image
Construction to build a secondary campus for St Matthews Catholic School in Mudgee starts this week. After two years of planning and design, the project will see $33-million worth of investments make way for a chapel, sporting capacities, multipurpose hall, music, drama and science facilities. A main reason for the development of another campus is to accommodate for the growing numbers of students. Principal of St Matthews Catholic School, Angela Myles, says growth also means more opportunity for additional education outcomes. “The number of students that we’ve had enrol in the school has increased rapidly in the last few years, and we are in anticipation now of being able to have facilities to match that.” She also says “once we open up at the secondary campus, we will be able to extend more into integrating subjects around STEM and through art, and to make the most of the facilities that we’ll have there.” Mrs Myles also shares that there’s been a positive response to the devel

A Push In Local Elections

Image
It’s not just local MPs pushing more locals to run for the Resident Government elections, in the regions, but now State politicians are offering encouragement. With local government elections coming up at the end of this year state-wide, the call out is saturated in the need for fresh faces. Deputy Premier, John Barilaro spoke 2MG’s Ken Suttcliffe on the weekend, about his rise to politics. Mr Barilaro also says many people who “throw their hands up for local government love their region, who are born and bred, and understand the issues and in many cases can offer solutions”.

Possible Regional Housing Boom

Image
The affordability, and the issue of housing in regional areas such as ours has been discussed with the Deputy Premier, John Barilaro on 2MG, saying that the bounce back from drought and COVID-19 has seen a boom time for the bush. “I’m willing to work with any local council to see where the State Government can provide any resources or focus to assist them to unlock this land”. He says “we have to think about the fact that opening up larger blocks of land further out of towns might not be the way forward anymore; and with local MPs such as Dugald Saunders jumping in to talk about developing townhouse and multi-level developments, which might sound absurd for regional towns but that urban development is just as important”. Mr Barilaro goes onto say that the major moves from the cities have been unexpected. “No-one would’ve expected that off the back of COVID, that people would migrate from Sydney, and it looks like we’ll have another Sydney summit, because Sydney is in decline and the bu

More Improvements For Mudgee Showground

Image
The Mudgee Showground keeps changing in leaps and bounds, this time with additional infrastructure set to be installed. Rodeo chutes and additional portable cattle yards will be making headway soon, with the announcement earlier in the week that Mudgee Show Society had successfully applied for $47,360, through the State Government Crown Reserve Improvement Fund.  The installment will mean the show society will be able to expand what is offered at the grounds, and ultimately the town. Mudgee Show Society secretary, Allison Beer, says the new equipment will allow for further events to be held, with “plans to host another rodeo later in the year”, this time not having to rely on hiring equipment from Branxton. The 2021 Mudgee Show will be held this weekend, but strictly agriculture competitions only.
